Asemic Writing:

A Simple Creative Practice to Quiet Your Mind

Discover a playful way to step away from the mental chatter, reconnect with your creativity, and make art without worrying about whether it’s “good.”

What if you could quiet your mind without trying so hard to quiet your mind?

Sometimes the harder we try to stop thinking, the louder our thoughts seem to get. This practice offers another way in.

If you’re craving a creative practice that feels playful instead of intimidating, or a way to quiet the noise in your head without needing to be good at anything, you’re in the right place.

I believe creativity belongs to all of us. It doesn’t have to be complicated, beautiful, or even make sense to be meaningful.

This simple, playful practice invites you to put pen to paper, let your hand take over, and see what happens.

There are no words to get right, nothing to spell correctly, and no particular outcome you’re working toward. You make marks, follow your intuition, and allow yourself to play.

It’s called asemic writing

It looks a little like writing, but it doesn’t have to mean anything. And that’s part of what makes it so freeing.

For a few minutes, there’s nothing to figure out, fix, accomplish, or get right. You’re simply making.

But underneath all of that, this is really about self-connection: a few minutes to step away from the mental chatter and hear something other than your thinking mind.

“I love how asemic writing is so meditative, yet also really expressive. Sometimes I don’t always want to use words in my sketchbooks, and that’s where asemic writing for me fills the gap. Margie is such a thoughtful and caring teacher.”

— Susan Yeates

You don’t have to think of yourself as an artist to do this

Already an artist?

Asemic writing can give you a way to loosen up, move through creative blocks, and return to a more intuitive way of making.

It can help you step outside your usual way of making and discover new marks, rhythms, patterns, and possibilities for your artwork.

Don’t consider yourself creative?

That’s okay, too. Asemic writing is a surprisingly accessible doorway into creativity, with no drawing or painting skills required.

You don’t have to make something “good.” You just need a pen, some paper, and a willingness to see what happens.

“I love incorporating writing into my works but WOW!! I learned so many new ways to play with lettering and symbols in this mini course! I cannot wait to get my hands on your full course on Asemic Writing techniques!”

– Tish Reed

In a Drexel University study, 75% of participants experienced lower cortisol levels after a single art-making session, and their artistic experience didn’t seem to matter.

“Margie’s asemic writing class opened up so much for me. I’d already played with loose cursive scribbles in my journals, but bringing in the graffiti-style writing added this beautiful boldness and energy that my work was missing. And the symbols? That honestly opened a whole new world for me, not just another technique, but a new practice and visual language I can’t stop exploring. I’m already seeing my art differently.”

Meet Margie

I’m Margie Woods, the artist and teacher behind Language of the Soul® Studios.

I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and trained as a therapist, although I don’t practice therapy. What I offer isn’t art therapy, but after more than 30 years of making art, I know firsthand how deeply therapeutic the creative process can be.

I’ve used some version of asemic writing for decades, long before I knew it had a name. Making marks. Scribbling. Layering. Writing without words. Allowing my hand to move without worrying about the outcome.

Over time, these practices became a way for me to get out of my head, connect with myself, and find my own visual language. They eventually became part of the foundation of my Language of the Soul® work.
Today, I teach women how to reconnect with themselves through creativity, whether they’re experienced artists, haven’t made art in years, or don’t consider themselves creative at all.
You don’t need special talent.

You don’t need years of experience.

You just need a willingness to show up, put something on the page, and see where it takes you.
An Invitation to Asemic Writing is a simple place to begin, and I’d love to share it with you.
